The user has the option of numbering each fiber pair by STRAND or by PAIR.

For example, on a 12-fiber cable, STRAND numbers each fiber individually, such as 1 through 12,

while PAIR numbers each pair 1 through 6, and distinguishes between each fiber in the pair, such as A and B.
