First, let's cover what the 568-3.D standard calls "distributors". Distributors are simply distribution points in a hierarchical star topology -- what many experienced technicians will recognize as "distribution frames" or "cross-connects".

Distributor C is defined as the central connection facility in a hierarchical star topology, previously known as Main Distribution Frame (MDF) or Main Cross-connect (MC).

There will typically be only one Distributor C / MDF / MC in a hierarchical star network.
